I can hold my on against most classes. But in the last few nights of playing Death Knights seem to be coming out of the woodwork. Even a Death Knight at my same level I am having problems with. I am looking for any for any hints on how to handle this problem.

Thanks

You haven't listed your level, your spec, or what you are trying to do, or what situation you are in.

Sorry for the lack of Info.

I am a level 64 Deep Fire Mage.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Bonechewer&n=Hellsscream

I play on a pvp server, so most of the time I am questing when they attack. Their first move seems to always be to pull me to them. I then try a frost nova and blink, this does not always get me far enough away. I then start working on my instant cast, blastwave, dragons breath, etc.

Can you sheep a DK?

Thanks

You can sheep any class, as long as they don't have antimagicshell up. (which they don't learn until 70 I believe).

Deep fire will almost always be part of a losing battle against a melee class because of your lack of snares. If he pulls you in, chains of ice and holds you there you are in trouble. Especially if he has one of his minions there.

That pretty much sums it up, pulls me in - then the chains and the zombie pet. So I guess as long as I stay fire, I will just learn to accept my defeats until I repec at 70.

Remember, this game is a like a big game of rock-paper-scissors so if you have a lot of trouble with a class (warlock for instance), it is most likely designed that way.

Yeah, Locks use to be the bane of my existence as a mage. Now, I can consistently beat them as Arcane now. Thinking about, it seems like i see a less of the warlock doggy pets out.

As a fire mage you should have plenty of toys to kill a DK. When he pulls you in just blastwave and blink away. This gives you time for a fireball or scorch. When he gets closer use dragons breath and another fireball. Then you can nova, run and yet another fireball. Add in fire blast someplace and the dude should be almost dead. If not use iceblock and wait for you cooldowns to be ready again.

His pull is countered by your blastwave, his chains of ice is countered by blink. He really shouldn't stand a chance.

I do honestly believe that Fire was the only build intended to best a Unholy DK in a true PVP situation. Fact is, Unholy is a beast versus all casters. Rogues and Warriors bring them to their knees though, and a Paladin can last for days against them.

Fire does have some nice moves against DKs, but in the end the survivability just isn't there. Lets face it - until you're 80 and you start getting Stamina by the boatload and you can actually get some PVP gear, you're basically a 3 shot kill for a DK - so even with the best of abilities if you fowl up once you're done. They are actually addressing fire for the Next patch - so there you go. I fully believe that they will Balance fire to be able to take on Ret Paladins and Unholy DKs.

This is still a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors... but now instead of it just being class based its much more Spec based. As PVE Arcane I'll take Marks/Surv to the ground, BM still rocks my Socks. With a much bigger HP buffer and a huge buff to Mage Armor, Affliction is less of a concern, where the shear damage output of Destro+Demo can blow a hole in my Face. Ele is a Joke, where Hance will wreck me. I can kite Fury for days, but Protection lasts too long and Reflect ruins my day and Arms can straight up dominate me. Downing blood or frost is a walk in the park, but Unholy just doesn't give me a fair chance. Rogues/Ferals make Mage stew out of me, and Boomkins I find myself on equal ground, but I'm one of the few that can put out the burst and interrupts needed to take out a Resto Druid.

If you look at these same class/specs from a different Mage spec, the whole thing shifts. Frost often has the exact opposite experience. Of course a TON of this is up to skill - but knowing your enemies and who has a real upper hand over you is probably the best thing you can learn, whether its for WPVP, Battlegrounds, or Arenas.

I don't see your problem. From a DK perspective (since I'm not playing a mage yet - only toying with the idea of doing so):

Anti-Magic-Shell takes runepower to use, and a DK obviously doesn't have any at the beginning of a fight. If you nuke in the beginning, then iceblock while he is (nearly)immune and wait out the duration of AMS, you really shouldn't have too many problems.

One on one I don't have much trouble with Deathknights usually. I hate dealing with them in Arena though although thats generally not a 1 on 1 fight. But there have been several times I have fought them 1 on 1 in various situations and I usually can take them down.

I always run around with some spare RP on my DK. Add to that the fact that AMS has a 45s cooldown and he has Strangulate and Mind Freeze to help close the gap and things get iffy. Add in Icebound Fortitude for a period of decent damage reduction and Chains of Ice as a decent snare, and you're looking at some pain.

Not saying that they're impossible to beat, just that they have a fair number of ways of dealing with mages.

Haha Kann try it from a Mage perspective.

The "Iceblock and Wait" works for a lot of things, especially now that BM Hunters can't Red twice in a row, but not versus DKs. All you end up doing is giving them time to get all their Runes up again and give close the gap for their ever-popular Death Grip cooldown.

All I use Iceblock for against them is after a solid Snare/Sheep I'll IBlock then Invis then run.

Sorry but unless you severely outgear a DK and/or they are a complete moron, theres no chance for a Mage right now. I'm not really complaining though, as we have some nice techniques to get away from you guys, and other than you we're on the top of the Food Chain.

Well DK's generally are the type that if you are in their range and sight, you're boned. As a healadin I find no problems of humiliating them on several occassions (especially with holy shock + judgements.)

Mages though typically Frost should have no problem against them because of snares, just increase your range to max and stay further than 30 yards away cause of Death Grip and you'll be fine. Unholy should be your biggest problem as they are the **** at PvP because of their AoE spamming. Still it usually comes down to a mix and match of rotations that beat them. Against Blood I usually have to wear them down along with frost, and Unholy I just have to outlast them until back up arrives. Remember 1 on 1 is not a wise thing to do, always go for the gangbang.

Ya, On my server there's a ton of DK's running around so I stayed with my fire spec.

The tips above have proven to work well with me as well. Blastwave and blink are your friend here especially if you have the blink glyph..wink wink..Most players don't expect the blastwave blink combo...they are so used to nova, fireball..

Myself I prefer the instant casts in the fire spec, like fireblast, dragons breath and scorch as my back up stacker...but blastwave blink is a great follow up I find to the inital fireball if I can pull it off or fireblast..

i am an arcane mage so that helps with this, but i was in bg going up against a dk, like you said he started by using deathgrip on me. i figured i would just try it cause i hadn't found any other way to counter it, but when he was pulling me in before i reached him i used invisibility (which i have points in which make it instant) so by the time i reached him i was invisible and he couldnt attack me, wasting his deathgrip and saving my blink for when he uses his other holds. before coming out of invisibility i got far enough away that he would have to trap me to get close enough to fight. when he did i blinked away, slowed him and started nuking him. it seemed to work pretty well, but im not sure if that will work without the arcane invisibility.

I've yet to defeat an equally geared DK that wasn't afk. FFB sucks for PvP :(

Sketch -- was what happened there due to the fact that the DK didn't have D&D or some other aoe down in the area he gripped you to? I'd think that'd break invis.

Yes. Instant Invis is a VERY powerful tool, but I don't recommend using it close to your enemies unless you know it's simply to clear target. Fact is, many classes have an Instant AE ability that will detect you if they can figure out just about where you are (especially right next to them.)

What happened for Sketch was that either the DK was inexperienced or was under the impression his DG didn't work. It has to be very confusing having your DG target flying at you turn invisible. This is still a viable choice also, if you're intending to Frost Nova or something a second after you land and continue to run. Pretty sneaky =)

I have a lvl63 Ice Mage. When I fought a DK, the first thing I did was bring up my water elemental. He continue to damage while I freeze and shield. Water Ele also as the ability to freeze just in case the first one does not hold. Plus when anyone is frozen, you can cast a silence spell that lasts for at least 5 seconds. Plenty of time to launch blizzard.
