AoE for a WarlockFollow

I am new to the warlock class, currently level 56, and I often run across comments about a group needing a warlock for their AoE capabilities. I am going all the way into the Demon tree and so far haven't seen anything that I recognize as an AoE talent/ability. What am I missing? My Felguard can handle several mobs but I doubt if that is what is meant.

Thanks

The first tier of the Affliction tree improves our best AOE (Seed of Corruption).
They need to buff our AOE abilities in general. I dont use Hellfire in level-relative conent, and Rain of Fire has lower DPS than Seed of Corruption.

And seed of corruption is an amazing AoE. Rain of fire is pretty good before you get seed. While it would be nice there would be absolutely no reason to buff our AoE, especially considering we are already one of the top if not the top AoE class.

Rain of Fire is actually excellent AoE. Seed can be better, but if stuff is dieing too fast then it's no good. This is a problem in most WotLK content so far, mages blizzard and Hunters Volley kill things before I can get more than a couple seeds off. RoF outdamages SoC in these cases. On the harder trash, I tend to pull aggro if I SoC, but with RoF I can do great AoE and not pull aggro.

In 10 and 25 man raids I typically top the meter on AoE pulls with RoF. For the really weak stuff just AoE, for tougher stuff throw CoA on a few things for Molten Core procs and then RoF.

By that, I mean they should remove Hellfire, or make it more practical. Seed and RF are best once you have both, so there's very few situations where you want to hurt yourself to get less damage.
I have to double check the damage meter when I use Seed, because it doubles my usual DPS, and I am not used to seeing the numbers that high during short fights lol.
Hellfire is most useful when you know the fight is about to end, and you want to try to finish everything quickly. If you have Soul Link and/or Siphon Life, you wont need much healing.

I had enormous fun with Hellfire on the Undercity part of the Wrathgate quest. Buffed to blazes and getting healed for 10k every few seconds I was doing 3k damage per mob, per tick. I had to reset the damage meter after that because it was silly. Smiley: smile

Maybe I'm missing something but as I read it Seed of Corruption is a single target DoT then a one-hit AE after 18 seconds?
Whereas Rain of Fire is 2.7k damage over 8 seconds starting immediately. Hence I've always used RoF.

However looking them up to write this I see that, taking base values, SoC uses 34% mana to do 1800 to surrounding mobs ie 53 dmg/mana. While RoF uses 57% to do 2700 ie 47 dmg/mana.

I've learned something Smiley: smile

Have they changed it to where it no longer asplodes when the mob it's on has taken a certain amount of damage from any source?

Because if so, my old AV strategy is no longer viable.

It does 1000+ over 18 seconds to the target and then explodes hitting everything for 15 yards for a single hit of about 1500-1800. It also explodes if the target dies.

I'm finding the mana cost figures here somewhat hard to work out. The spell table says RoF uses 57% but I looked in game last night and mine only costs 2127 mana which is definitely not 57% of my total! I guess talents etc change things but that is about one fifth of the suggested value.

In the old days, it would explode after 1000ish damage was done to the target. Has that part in fact been removed?

The spell description does not hint that it has.

Quote:
When the target takes 1518 total damage or dies, the seed will inflict 1633 to 1897 Shadow damage to all other enemies within 15 yards of the target.

With multiple things hitting the target you seed, the question becomes whether 2 ticks of RoF are worth more than 1 explosion of SoC. I haven't seen the math on it, so I don't know the answer to that question. However, you're missing the true glory of Seed: the fact that in many situations, the explosion happens long before 18s is up.

The thing about the % of mana it uses, it's % of base mana. In other words if you were naked.

SOC will trigger if mob takes 1k or so dmg from any source.
So by the time you finish casting your first one, the other aoe er's already being at work, your seed will detonate on contact basically.
So spam seed at will and save a little bit of mana for rain of fire at the end to finish up the work.

trash pulls in nax so far I have been SoC generally 3-5 before their on their last legs chuck in a Shadowfury to pop any remaining seeds ( you want your seeds poping while all the mobs are on the table) then dropping RoF to clean up,

This works most effectively if you can cast early before other aoe allows classes pop your seeds, this allows you to plant 3 -5 before they start poping, this is easy after the first pull as most other classes are drinking ha ha
