New Priest that needs adviceFollow

I am new to WoW and have rolled a Draenei priest. Currently at lvl 22. I have done abit of reading in this forums recommended by my friend. My aim for this priest is to do healing in end game. I understand that shadow is the best talent to do fast leveling. However I am more into the Holy and Disc talent aspect of the game as I would like to start doing heals from the 1st instance that I go.

From what I have read here so far it seems that the stats priest should go is spirit, intellect and stamina and towards the end spell power. Kindly correct me if i am wrong here.

As for my current spec I am unable to link it as the armory is down for maintenance. So this is how I have put my points that is listed below.

1. 3 points in spirit tap
2. 5 points in Twin Discipline
3. 5 points in Holy Specialization

I am about to get to my next level now. I do understand from reading here is that Disc priest is more for single or tank heals and Holy is more for group heals.

I was wondering for leveling is it possible to go Disc rather then leveling as Holy. Again I have no intention of leveling as shadow. Currently at lvl 22 I dun seem to have any problems with spirit tap kicking in after each kill with a good wand. So is it possible to go Disc for leveling and heals for low level instances.

Also does tailoring help. It seems there better gears being offered than what tailoring offers. I am currently taking mining and skinning as a gathering profession for Gold which is required for my mount. Planning to drop both once I have hit lvl 80. Then I could power level the profession that I will take. Since I have no choice for gold, i rather take up the gathering skills and save up the gold for a epic mount and flying mount. No intention of buying gears but will run instance to grab the best gears for leveling.

Thank you

Cheers

Hmm, I should include an answer to this in the sticky.

To summarize it shortly; leveling shadow will still get you to 80 quickest, but it's quite possible to do your leveling as disc or holy. Doing so comes with one major 'concern': you will be able to heal instances with ease. This is on one side a good thing, but on the other side people will argue that you can heal anything up to level 70 as shadow spec anyway, and doing so in fact makes you a better healer (since you learn to heal the hard way, without all the crutch talents). In the end, like with so many things, the final answer is "Do what suits you most". Pretty much all options are open and they all have their pros and cons - so go with the one you like.

Perfectly possible to level as Disc. Shadow is more efficient and you can heal perfectly fine without being specced for it at the lower levels. But if something else is more fun for you, you can level in any tree just fine. If I were doing pure Disc I'd go with something like this up through my mid-40's (at that point you'll be your own expert and can decide where to go from there). Moz will probably have a better idea. ;)

10-12: Spirit Tap
13-17: Twin Disciplines
18:22: Improved Inner Fire, Improved Fort
23-27: Inner Focus, Meditation, 1 point in Improved PW:S
28-32: Mental Agility
33-42: Divine Spirit, Improved DS, Mental Strength, finish off Improved PW:S
43-46: Reflective Shield, Power Infusion

Most of the lower talents on the Disc tree improve efficiency or defense. There are actually a few offensive talents in the Holy tree that can be useful while leveling too. I might also do something like this to be able to heal and solo fairly well. It's a mess, but that's the thing with leveling builds. Don't be afraid to have a spec that looks goofy; the talents that are useful for leveling are often nothing like what an endgame build would look like.

Edited to add: you ask about tailoring. It's not particularly useful while leveling (you can generally find as good or better gear while making money). I'd do what you're doing and pick up my crafting profs later.

Tbh I'd pretty much do what you pointed out =P. The thing with disc is that it's low level talents are either pure PvP talents or mana conservation ones. Pretty easy choice from that point when you're leveling. The only change I'd make is to pick up Holy Spec and Divine Fury before heading further into the disc tree than Meditation & Inner Focus.

That said, I mostly agree with you. If you decide not to level shadow there's simply plenty of options. Either you go disc, or you go disc/holy, or you go holy. I don't think any of those 3 spells are noticeably better.

If you're wanting to start healing from the start, you'll struggle a bit with leveling due to the lack of DPS you'd get from Shadow, but if you're still up for the challenge, I wouldn't bother with Spirit tap as you will get zero benefit from it while in groups because YOU have to make the killing blow. Being that you're already level 22, you can have 2/2 Healing Focus (for obvious prevention of knock-back while healing), 5/5 Holy Specialization (increased chance for healing and holy damage spell crits), 5/5 Divine Fury (lowered casting times on healing and holy damage spells) and Desperate Prayer for emergency situations.

I was a geared Priest pre-LK and i've dusted him off after gearing up my Death Knight and i'm leveling in Northrend as Holy. I can tell you that even here, it's a challenge, but you will have a very easy time healing and getting groups.

I did the same thing - Rolled a Draenei priest.

It sounds to me like you are saying I want to heal instances, but I don't want to roll holy priest from 1 - 80.

Here's the answer: Roll Shadow....

I have a 36 shadow priest and I just healed the every instance in SM with ZERO problems. You are new, so you're understanding of the game is less. Rolling full holy and trying to heal will give you a greater margin of error. (aka - you'll be better suited to heal - so ******** up won't be as bad.)

However - rolling Disc or Shadow will both reduce you healing ability - thus make it slightly harder. As a new player, it's not impossible, just a little bit harder.

For example one of the lower lvl holy tree slots will give you a +heals to your Heal over Time (HoT). That's a great helper for keeping the DPS safe or lowering the spike damage on the tank. However - to overcome that - you just need a bit of practice....

When you get into your 60s you might need to re-spec healer.
By 70+ you need to be a healer to heal.

On a side note - Not many people are down in old world content. Just roll Shadow and get through it ASAP.

I leveled as shadow. Pre 60 I had no problems whatsoever healing in groups. After 60 I was still shadow and that's when healing in groups started to show a difference. It was harder.

Leveling 1-60 it doesn't really matter what spec you go with. You should be able to dps decently and heal anything you need to.
Leveling 60-70 You'll start to notice a difference. You can still dps and heal in any spec.
Leveling 70-80 You'll probably notice the biggest difference.

However shadow will always be faster for leveling in all of those levels. Disc and holy aren't bad but shadow beats them hands down.

I recommend shadow until at least level 60. From there I would base it on how often you get into groups. From 60-70 it probably won't be that often because everyone is in the 70-80 areas now.

Thank you all so much for being helpful. I am starting to like it already. Will try to level as Holy and see how it goes. I take this journey of leveling my priest a lesson to learn. So probably will respec a few times and play around on the talents to see how it goes. Will probably give shadow a go as well.

I do find the spirit tap useful as I am almost leveling on my own unless its an instance. So I guess I will stick with the 3 points there. Thank you for letting me know :).

As of now I try to level my priest and read as much as I can here. Towards the end game is where I would need help the most as to the stats that is important for my priest like how much spirit, spellpower and stuffs like that. I know you experience players here will be glad to help.

Once again thank you so much for your help.

Have a good week ahead

Cheers all :)

I tried all the specs along the way. I levelled 25 levels as shadow to being with, I then changed to Disc/Holy hybrid spec choosing point in places I felt benefited my playstyle. Once I hit 50 I went back to shadow until 65 when I went full Holy then full shadow a couple of levels later. At 70 I went back to Disc/Holy hybrid with a brief foray into full Holy at 80 I have now gone to full Disc. Although I don't have the flexibility of Holy with COH when healing multiple targets I have the benefit of penance and rapture which are my friend. I use PWS and renew (buffed by the holy talent at low end of the tree) to keep my dps alive when they are taking damage and if I need to drop a POH I user inner focus first to reduce mana cost and spee dup casting time. I have healed heroics and a Naxx raid as Disc without any more than teething problems due to my inexperience. It is all down to your personal preference and play style. Try every spec and see what fits.

Inner Focus will increase your crit chance, not your haste. You can shield someone prior to casting your IF+PoH to decrease cast time if you have Borrowed Time.
