ok so my warrior hit 80 today, and somthing told me to go Prot. I'm a great tank from what I hear. With the gear I had gotten from quests, instances,and the AH, included the epic 80 BoE shield, I sit at 21k hp unbuffed, and defense at 495.
Where am I in terms of heroics vs reg 80 instances. also what are some 80 instances with gear to help toward heroics. And are there Heroics I can do before getting reaching the minimun Defense?(540 right?)

Go spam HoL normal until you get the tanking trinket from Loken, this will bring your defence up a lot.
Also slapping some +def enchants on your gear wont be a bad idea, specially the shield.
Don't forget that for heroic the def cap is only 535 not 540, so if you dont plan on raiding yet dont worry about pushing 540.
I started heroics before I was crit capped, my first was COT was a wild run.

thanks for the help, I'm going to get the +20 defense enchant on sheild this morning, and will work towards that trinket, I was also looking around, and is the only other half-decent tanking trinket pre-raid the one from Heroic azjol?
First of all get tempered saronite belt and bracers. Both are very easily obtainable from AH for relatively low price. It should bump up Your def rating right up. You might want to consider getting Epic titansteel helm and boots as well. Mats are pretty expensive but worth it. Especially helm after 3.0.8 is sweet. These three pieces should be Your immediate concern.
Try to scan Ah constantly since large number of upgrades You can get is boe.
Look at reputation rewards, many nice pieces come from there(Wyrmrest accord in particular). You itemize properly but some pieces of gear You have just has too low def rating on it. Socket for defense once You have better gear. Don't bother with enchantin weak items with pricy stuff like titanweave. Look at demog's gear guide at tankspot.com, figure out what is accesible to You. When next upgrade is small/hard to get go for enchants.

ok, thanks, I was curious if the Helm/boots would be worth the heavy price tag, thanks for clearing it up, I am a 450 miner so I might be able to farm up all of the mats pretty quickly
Stop playing instances.
farm the mats for boots and helmet. (This might take some time)
Also farm mats (if you want to craft them) to fill spots in your gear that aint that good. (AH offers cheap saronite plate)
Bam!! defence rating should reach 540+. And stamina around 21.000++ HP
Get the tabart for improving your reputation with the Wyrmrest accord faction
Then Farm HOL for the nice trinket , run Nexus hc and UK hc for badges/reputation.
Get enough badges to buy a nice epic belt. (You can put an extra gem slot there)
Buy the reputation items from Wyrmrest accord faction ( boots, chest ,cloak)
Do some cheap Enchants in all those items.
Buy tabart ofArgent Crusade- Run heroics - Get leggins-get head Enchant
Run VH as many times possible-get epic leggins- Tank trinket
Run CoT as many times possible-get epic Shield- Enchant shield +Def rating
Buy tabart of Kirin Tor - Run heroics -get exalted-buy epic gloves
When y feel confident run 10 man raids like OS , VoA to get T7 Chest and T7 Gloves.
Run heroics-get badges-buy whatever epic you can
Run Pinnacle-get epic sword
Run Ajol Nerub-get +111 stamina trinket
Go PUG in Naxx as an offtank. You might get some epics from there.
Run HOL or Gundrak for Blue tank shoulder item.
After that you should be almost full epic....so run Naxx to fill the spots left...

Everyone gave good advice above. Work on some of the Tempered stuff (if you can farm the mats, it's a whole lot cheaper, and it's really not a lot of saronite... compared to some things like some engineering recipes).
Also enchant your stuff... Big Time. It'll bring you up quite a bit. I'm only level 75, and I'm already sitting at 515 defense, and close to the same amount of health and armor as you.
If you're looking to focus more on defense first (without gimping your other stats too much), there is a mace quest reward from Zul'Drak that has similar stats as your sword but includes Defense rating instead of parry.
There's also a chest piece from Old Kingdom that you can try to get that's slightly better than the one you have now. You'll lose a little bit of expertise but gain stam, strength, and def.

thanks for those links, ive been running heroics and have picked up 21 emblems and The Red Sword of Courage which was a lucky break to be humble. So i guess ill just keep plugging away at them, VoA when I can, and one last question, what should me health look like to start running 10 mans.
