Currently in my guild there is quite the argument going about this little gem... to put it bluntly the Hunters want equal loot priority on it to the melee. My main is a Fury warrior so I am undoubtably biased, on the other hand the rule of thumb that has been drilled into me since it came to my attention guns had nice stats too was that hunters have priority on ranged weapons and melee have priority on melee weapons.

What I would like to know is how the rest of the hunter community (this will also go up on WoW forums) would handle this.

1) Would you let hunters have equal priority or wait until our melee have it?
2) Why?

My argument is currently based on the fact that the DPS incrase on it over other 2hers out there is extremely valuable, as 14 AP=1 DPS the Betrayer not only has extra base stats but 266 AP worth of extra damage. While hunters stand back and use only it's stats melee'rs use both the stats AND the damage on it.

Is there a flaw in this? Am I just plain wrong about how I see melee weapons these days?

That axe rocks. Good AP and Agi. It is a good Hunter weapon. Plus a good stamina. What else you can ask for?

It does good for hunter as it does for any DD that looks for increase his own DPS.

Sorry dude, but for my eyes this is a Main Spec Roll (DPS war, hunter, Pally, Drk, whatever)

I would give priority to the melee if it was an increase in dps rather than just stats.

just the same as a hunter should have priority for ranged weapons if the dps of the weapon is much higher than their current.

Journey's end drops from the same boss, and that's a better hunter weapon than Betrayer.
(at least it will be after the patch hits)

I have already won the roll on this, and passed it to the highest rolling melee.

It hurt then, and it hurts now, but it was the right thing to do.

Our raid uses the same principles as the OP. Melee first, hunters second.

Here is a question though, with the change to feral druid staves, would druids and hunters have the same priority? Essentially, druids are just using them as stat weps too.

For instance Staff of the plague beast had its stats changed to:

Two-Hand Staff
358 - 537 Damage Speed 2.40
(186.5 damage per second)
630 Armor
+89 Agility
+135 Stamina
Equip: Increases attack power by 136.

Its not amazing, but, some of the higher tier staves might rival best in slot weps for hunters in the future

The players I have run with for anything have always tended to favor who gets the best bang for the buck from the increase. If it's close enough or more of a sidways move than upward, it's just a roll off and we've had odd mixes of roll offs there that were amusing including a mage for DE'ing the thing. If nobody needs or wants it, it goes to the DE pool.

It's a great rule that works well for everyone in a steady group. If you are on the bottom of the totem pole, getting you more stuff earlier on makes you more effective for the group the next runs. So, if you're always running with the same people, the rule works well. If you're always running with different folks, PUG's and such, then the other methods mentioned would work better than ours does.

Journey's end is already the SV/MM best in slot.
And Druids get feral AP based on weapon damage, so they do get more benefit from the weapon than hunters.
