Hi all, I've just started a rogue and was wanting some advice. I've looked around for some help like talents, weapon choices, and such, but I'm just getting confused and would appreciate it if somebody is able to give just a straight answer as to what is recommended for those previous categories. I'm only at lvl 10, so a good leveling talent tree would be nice, as well as weapons and stats I should focus on.

First and foremost read the sticky(Rogue FAQ). It will give you a great in-sight of everything rogue related. With that being said I personally suggest you going with Combat swords until about level 60-70ish. Whenever you get two really good to decent daggers I would go Mutilate.

Only 41 points in assassination is really needed, because all you are really trying to get is Mutilate itself. Hunger for blood isn't a good leveling spec, because you will spend too much time traveling to keep it stacked. After that you should go into combat and get DW specialization and precision with 5 points in Close combat. After that put 5 points in relentless strikes and then get up in sub to get 3 of 3 in Serrated Blades.

These two specs I discussed are just the "cookie cutter" leveling specs and you should go with what you like to play. After all it is a game. Make sure you play it like it is one.

Edit: Edited for drunken misspelling.

Go combat. Try to find a slow weapon for main-hand and fast for off-hand.
You need agility, attack power and some stamina. And read the sticky, you should find more usefull tips there.

Ignore the one above me, bad advice.

I would advise reading the rogue FAQ first, and just get the best weapons you can. Really until you start instances and raids you don't need to worry about extreme min/maxing as it will yield not much of a difference.

Just read all you can from the FAQ and elitist jerks and absorb it all, as when you get to 80 you will be a much better player for doing so. If you have any specific questions between now and then post them here and we will be glad to help you.

Happy Hunting!

Understandably it can fly right over your head when you first read it. But if you are looking for a leveling spec try Theo's guide (the FAQ) and check in the talent section. There is a build there for leveling and it should say to put points into combat first.

Okay Redbarron I get it haha yes rogues push 3 buttons. However while we are pressing the 3 buttons we are also making sure of our timers on 3 different abilities, Slice'n'dice, Rupture, and hunger for blood. As well timing the attacks to refresh those 3 timers accordingly to maximize DPS and minimized combo point waste. Oh don't forget being a functioning member of a raid strategy as well.

Seriously I don't come into your class forums and claim you mash 3 buttons so I would ask you to respect the fact I am trying to help a nooblet and not give bad, ignorant advice like that.

Don't waste your time with replying to redbarron. He has well over 300 post and is still a non-scholar. If you want to trust/believe someone with that kinda track record. Be my guest.

Playing a rogue myself and it being my favorite class I'll try and help out. I first started a rogue using daggers. One thing about daggers is they crit more then swords but miss way more as well. If your going to level and do not want to worry about placement on the field, level combat. Get you a slow strong main hand weapon like a cruel barb from vc(deadmines) that drops off of Vancleef. http://www.wowhead.com/?item=5191

For a good offhand sword get my personal fav at those levels The Thiefs Blade that drops Mr. Smite also in deadmines: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=5192 . As for gear if you happen to stumble across any of the monkey gear. Get it. That gear is gold to a rogue. Agi and Stam is what you will worry about at those lower levels. Later levels will be Agi, Stam + AP. Keep your lock picking up as there are always people needing boxes open. My LP skill is 200 right now as I'm only level 40 but have helped people from level 1-80 with the forums as my support.

Read alot. Read every post you can on peope asking the same questions as you have. Most likely its all already been answered. I'll give you a heads up on a combat build. At level 21 this is what you'll want yours to look like: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fZMxV

Level 30: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fZMxAz00Lo

Level 40: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fZMxAz00xqRz

Level 50: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fZMxAz00xqru0xo

Level 60: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fZMxAz00xqru0gRt

If you feel you do not use reposte which is a leveling talent. You can always use an extra attack. Though only usable after a parry. I keep it bounded to my middle mouse button. At level 60 your going to decide rather you want to stay combat or spec a mutilate build. I've yet to try mutilate but have heard good things about it. Right now I enjoy combat but its always good to keep a back up plan incase you feel for a change. This is pretty much what a leveling mut spec will look like: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0ecoexoi0sczZ0xV0xZebf

If you stay combat at level 70 this is pretty much you'll want: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0xZMxAz00xqru0gRtx

And finally at level 80: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0eb0xZMxAz00xqru0gRtx

Now for an end game guild when you'll start wanting to run dungeons and building up to heroics/raiding. This is a decent end game build: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0eb0xZMgVb00xqru0gRtx

When you get to northrend most will suggest getting a slow strong main hand fist weapon and a fast off hand dagger. Take the points from sword specialation and put them into close quarters combat. About end game gear and stats wise you'll have to consult the experienced raiders/heroics runners for tips. Most importantly read the stickie over and over again. How I learned about combat and gemming. I'm still learning as we all are. Level well fellow rogue and good luck.

For groups and raids I would drop unfair advantage and put the points in imp sprint. http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0eb0xZMgVb0bxqru0xRtx

Unfair advantage is for soloing. In groups you shouldn't be getting hit. Imp sprint is more useful for those mechanics that keep you away from hitting the boss.

Mental thanks for catching that. Now that I've looked at it I realized I missplaced it. I intented to fix it but didn't want to edit to much. All in all I'm sure he'll get the point and read the stickie. :D

To the OP, the path of least resistance is to equip a pair of swords, spam Sinister Strike until 5 CP, and use eviscerate for the kill. Depending on your personal stylings though, you may prefer the higher maintenance process of daggers; once you get to Level 60 or so, you can also explore the potential of a Mutilate build. Leveling effectively can be done with just about any equipment and talent build you can come up with, the game just doesn't complicate the leveling process enough to require optimum efficiency.

Once you get to 80 and start trying to refine yourself for heroic dungeons and raids, then you're going to want to sit down and take a serious look at your spec, choice of weapons, and rotation efficiency.

Don't buy gear off the AH. It's often overpriced and marketed for 'twink' characters. Just look for upgrades that drop as you play or from quests/dungeons, you'll be fine.

When picking weapons while leveling, generally any weapon with a higher DPS figure (the number in parentheses) will be an upgrade, and when choosing a weapon for mainhand vs offhand, the one with the higher 'top end' (the numbers just above the parentheses, says something like "17-23 damage") should be in your main hand, as this figure affects the damage dealt by your Sinister Strike ability.

That's really all you need to know to get started. The rest of it just kind of comes naturally, honestly. Expect your game to change drastically (for the better) when you get to 20 (poisons), and again when you get to 24 (Cheap Shot).
