Elementalist Mage cast rotation (0/58/13) (and your FFB Qs)Follow

Got it. I just wish frost was more viable for raiding. I love frost but to keep up in raids it seems you have to go fire and/or FFB but that's a little off topic so I'll stop there. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I just wanted to ask what numbers I should aim for before I go for an FFB build versus a fireball fire build.

Right now I am sitting at:

25% crit Fire unbuffed
1512 Spell Damage
121 Hit rating
271 Haste

Please note that I am just doing heroics, only seen the inside of naxx once so not really worried about raid numbers for hit, although I do have some gear to swap in for +hit if needed.

That looks pretty good to me, I would work on the hit, as you noticed, but the rest of them look pretty good for starts. When you say 25% crit unbuffed to you mean w/ or w/o glyph of molten armor (and molten armor on)?

25% crit is without molten armor, with molten armor and glyph I am sitting at just over 30%, with my other glyphs being scorch and Fireball (giving fireballs a 35% chance to buff or 45% chance with scorch up)
#31 Dec 21 2008 at 11:09 AM Rating: Excellent
well you will need to change that to frostfire bolt (glyph) if you respec, of course, but good choices.

1. If you finish a FFB and you have 1 second or less until LB goes off, do you pause casting anything to renew it as soon as possible or go on casting FFB and then LB?

2. Does using HotStreak pyro after FFB really do considerably less dps than if you would scorch before the pyro? Is the ignite munching that dangerous? I mean refreshing scorch only before it expires means more FFBs, refreshing scorch much earlier than its due, repeatedly, doesnt that cut into the FFBs time? Is it worth it?

3. If Hot Streak comes up is there any situation where it would be best to interrupt FFB to cast it?

I´m a bit sleepy so pardon me if my questions dont make sense.

Our last WWS is not up yet due to guildies RL stuff, I finally met Patchwerk for the first time and its a great fight to measure your dps as a caster, I did almost 3k (298.. something) and I´m worried its not near what my gear and spec should do (and i believe its due to the rotation, what to prioritize). I´ll post the WWS in our new WWS thread when I get it, meanwhile here is my armory: http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Hellfire&n=Ardentia

I know what my gear lacks or needs changing so don´t be scared (by my shoulders).

1) Never stop casting, wait until it is completely gone, that is a dps decrease any time that you stop casting.

2) It does and it doesn't. It has the possibility of critting for more than a FFB (depending on circumstances etc and rng) but if it crits for say 1k less than your FFB that is a decent chunk that is gone from your ignite ticks. You kind of have to judge it on your own. If scorch still has 28 seconds left and LB is fresh then go ahead and toss it out there, but if they are closer to being gone then refresh.

3) As in #1, never stop dpsing.

Refresh the scorch AND the LB before throwing pyro? I am in the habit of refreshing scorch if it's probably halfway gone (I guess?) before pyro, but I don't even think about LB at that point. Should I be? Hopefully I'll have a wws to post after tonite, since I just got it working and have 2 options for Naxx10 tonite (I think).

Not both but whichever one is in need of it. You can't recast lb unless it had exploded

Okay, I was just wondering about that because, when HS goes off, I immediately check the scorch debuff, but I don't nec. look for the LB debuff there. Is there an advantage to having LB up when you hit pyro? I guess since LB is instant cast, might as well throw it up anyway? I try to keep LB up at all times, except when I'm going to cast/use Combustion, but that's just something I never thought about, because I usually am pretty excited every time HS goes off. I'm a dork, I know. :)

When i play pve, i generally try to get a fb once in a while also.

When ffb not critting, right after next throw do a fb.
not very mana effective, but i do belive it increases the dps?

Not really, no. FB(assuming you mean fireball) benefits from a few different talents than FFB. Without them, it's at a sub-optimal DPS level.

If you meant Fireblast, then I'm not sure, haven't seen math on it. I like it for movement fights, though.
#39 Jan 09 2009 at 3:31 AM Rating: Decent
I did mean fireblast :)

sine u wont destroy any "current" critt you have on the target and if the ffb crits u lose the fb critt but gain a instant pyroblast.

The critt values of fblast are greater then ffb hence more instant pyroblasts.

But i was asuming you would have the answer for this. I guess i have to try some for my self.
Btw do you know of any nice target-cool-down counter? (not class-cd since it puts frost at same loc as fire and makes it unreadable).

fireblast is generally a dps decrease unless you are moving and lb is already applied. It doesn't scale that well and definite does not have the coeficients that ffb does for half the cast time.

I read somewhere that you can't recast LB once it's up? Thought you could, it just refreshes the timer before it explodes. Other than that, I like the post. Very informative as usual. I wouldn't expect anything less from you guys (Anobix and Poldaran) I just specced fire earlier in the week and hit 75. Me and my friends did Onyxia and it was fun, albeit I couldn't do anything but FFB lol. I didn't feel like respeccing back to frost or arcane. ZG was fun with FFB though. Again, thanks for the info! I'd rate up, but Karma kicked me in the *** a long time ago on these forums.

You can't(thankfully, or I'd lose a lot of DPM). At least, not on the same mob. You can cast on another mob to have it start over on that one, but there are only very limited situations where that's a good idea.
#43 Jan 12 2009 at 3:29 AM Rating: Decent
Hmmm, you shure? I coulda swore I cast it on the same mob twice (you know, once...then was a spaz and did it again; it just refreshed the countdown timer for the explosion).
#44 Jan 12 2009 at 5:36 AM Rating: Good
Nope, you can't. It will tell you something like spell not ready yet or invalid target.

You can cast it on one target and then another which removes it from the first target and then go back to that other one.

It's the one about the "more powerful spell present". Or something like that.

Maybe it was just me, but I was very unimpressed by Living Bomb. I had avoided it for a so long then I gave it a try during Heroic Nexus and I saw my dps lower by 1k. That was a pretty drastic lowering and made me feel worse about my dps with it than without it.

I had the "bright" idea of leaving LB aside for a Kelthuzad try because I was having mana issues, and I saw my dps lower a LOT on that try.

Thanks for the experiences. I think I'll leave it out of heroics. I just got a trinket I'm going to switch out for heroics, since I don't need as much hit, so hopefully I can help my groups through faster with better dps on 5mans.
#50 Jan 12 2009 at 3:24 PM Rating: Good
Heroics/5man content fights are far too short that using gcds on lb etc are a dps loss.

My rule for bosses:
Use it once while the tank is getting into position.
Use it any time you have to move.
Use it any time the boss will spawn adds on a set timer.

When clearing trash:
Toss it on the mob you know the shadowpriest will be using as the target of his AoE.
Ignore after that.

Outside those situations, it's not worth it.
