I've literally only played a bit but what I THINK I remember people saying is that, like any trilogy scenario, playing the first will enhance the latter two. But the 2nd is apparently structured so that you can play it without prior knowledge, and its combat systems are more intuitive and the controls are more reactive.
I've played some of the first one, but it fell victim to my Steam queue.
