What internet speed do I need to play?Follow

I've just started playing this game, but it has already managed to drive me mad. And since the official forum is not available for low levels (great idea to help them solve their problems - 10/10) I had to find you guys. As a huge FF games fan, this is a major dissapointment so far. But to the point:

What connection speed do I need to play? Yesterday it all seemed fine, but today I'm kicked out of server just after I get into it (doesn't matter that it shows 'excellent connection' in menu). I'm in Europe, so I play on European server (Cerberus). I don't have a problem browsing the Internet, watching YouTube or talking on TeamSpeak. Speed test shows 20Mb/s download and 3 Mb/s upload. It seemed to work (I could actually speak with NPC's and didn't get kicked for about 10 minutes) when it was 30Mb/s.

Where is the problem? Do I need connection speed 30Mb/s or higher to play? Or the problem is somewhere else?

There may have been a server issue. I played everything but primal content while deployed and using North American servers, connection where I was at was typically less than 5 Mbs

Ping is also very important, have you tried a scan on pingtest.net and to a location near where the EU server farm is?

Sounds like a server issue to me as well. The system requirements only say that you need a broadband connection, but your download and upload speed isn't as important as your ping.

Your D/U speeds are more than enough but you should check to make sure that you are playing on the correct data center server for EU. IIRC it's only Chaos at the moment. According to the wiki page, the worlds located on the EU data center are as follows:

Cerberus
Lich
Odin
Shiva
Moogle
Phoenix
Zodiark

I haven't played with character creation since the release of ARR, but if I'm not mistaken the names of servers located in EU are denoted by having '(EU)' following their name.

Other than that you might have to contact customer support and provide them with some information about your network to see if they have any ideas. Good luck to you.

Pingtest shows 40ms (tested right after I've got kicked out of server), I'm playing on Cerberus (EU) with my friend, who doesn't have such problems. He only experiences minor lags in crowded areas, while I can't even fight properly. I can spam spells, and the animation is smooth, but there is no damage and nobody moves except me. And (if I'm not kicked in the meantime) about 10 seconds later everything goes fast forward. Good thing the death penalty isn't harsh.

So is there anything I can do on my own, or is it the server's fault?

Two of us are playing simultaneously, sometimes with Mumble running too, through a single DSL connection that has 6.4 down and 0.41 up. The ISP's connection speed is not your problem.

Now of course you might be running into issues between your machine and the ISP connection box (DSL/cable modem or whatever), or you might be overloading your machine's performance by running details too high. If you have an Nvidia GEForce graphics card, there's a program available from nvidia called GEForce Experience which can set up your graphics parameters automatically for your system spec, that could be worth a try.

I'm playing on high details (bough a new laptop this year, so it should be able to do it), but this didn't happen at all the whole first day (about 4h of gameplay). It started yesterday and continues today. Usually I can play normally again after 15-20 minutes for the next 30-60 min until the next lag. Sometimes I can't do it for an hour, and sometimes (like today afternoon) I played for about 3 hours straight until I had a horrible lag and was kicked out of the game.

It's just that I have no idea what's the source and what I can do. My friend can play alright on Cerberus, I don't suppose there is an overall problem with the server?

The error I get is just: Connection with the server was lost - 90002. Looked it up on the web, but all I get is questions, not answers.

That's kinda where I thought you were going with this. So 90002 is actually a client-side disconnect. The server isn't involved in that, it's your client doing it. The client can and will disconnect you for all kinds of reasons, most known only to it and there's no documentation on it.

I was having a similar issue for over a year before I finally tracked it down to my CPU clock speed being SLIGHTLY out of step. So every once in a while I would gain or lose enough time on my clock to trigger a catch on the client that would boot me, seemingly at random. Unfortunately the only fix I could find for this was to replace my CPU, which isn't an option for a laptop user. If this is causing your disconnects, the only thing I can suggest would be to reduce your CPU load as much as you can while you're playing. Kill any antivirus or automatic updates or anything else running in the background and turn down your graphics settings and see if that helps any.

I've had a little break from the game lately. Yesterday I was kicked right after I started playing, so I lowered the graphics to medium and closed all the processes I recognised (printer control centre, bluetooth, Hamachi, Steam etc.) leaving only the game, the antivirus (AVG) and TeamSpeak and it worked for 6 hours straight, rarely causing only tiny lags. And when I thought the problem is solved, today I'm kicked right after I enter a game with the same setting (this time even without TeamSpeak).

Is my laptop really not able to handle the game? It has 8GB RAM (twice the recommended ammount), Intel Core i7-4710HQ at 2.50 GHz and dedicated GeForce GTX 860M. The battery is set on high performance, power cable plugged in, cooling pad under the whole thing.

I tried both Cerberus and Shiva servers - the same problem.

I have really no idea what can I do to play it normally. I guess all that is left is the technical support?

Those specs are fine. Unfortunately like I said, that error code just means that something happened your game client didn't like so it booted you. It can be caused by all sorts of things, most of which are unknown to the player community.

My next suggestion is SE's own tech support. And may the Twelve have mercy on your soul.
