Downtime - July 12, 2011

All SOE games and services are expected to be offline for several hours beginning in the very early morning hours on Tuesday:

Beginning July 12, 2011 at 1:00 a.m. US Pacific Time, we'll be performing maintenance on all games and services. During this maintenance, our forums, websites and games will also be unavailable. The estimated downtime for the maintenance is 7 hours.

We apologize for this interruption and will resume the affected services as soon as the maintenance is completed.

Website downtime inconveniences visitors and can be quite costly to an organization's reputation as well as its bottom line. But, is there ...

Can someone plz find a forum posy from the early 2000's? Cause the ones i remember is that Verant has the worst costumer service and they always went over on patch times.
Update through Social Networking
# Jul 12 2011 at 12:16 PM Rating: Decent
The only thing that irritates me, is that when the patches do go over the original ETA, we don't get an update. We can't check EQPlayers, because that's down too. How hard is it to jump on your SOE Facebook page, and say "Hey, sorry, but the patches are taking a little longer than expected." Getting information from Sony is like trying to wake the Sleeper: it's nearly impossible and it only happens once...
Oh, and if in the course of your patches, you're blocking your entire port list from your external systems, have Zatozia pick up her cell phone, sign in to Facebook there, and post an update... Come on guys... 10 minutes to get a status check is all I'm asking for...

Why, so they can pay Sony to run the game just like they used to? When erant DID have a hand in EQ, there was no shortage of complaining about what a joke Verant was and how they treated their customers like crap and didn't care and how they were always dropping the ball. People complain because they can and your statement just proves it. If you are that pissed off, quit playing. If you don't quit playing, you forfiet your right to say stupid things like "blow me sony".

I've played for ten years. I learned a LONG time ago that when Sony tells you five hours, expect double that. This happens with every MMO. I've seen it in DAoC, WoW, FFXI among others. Things happen. If you're angry just because maintenance goes long, then you should have been there for the release of Luclin. THAT was a debacle.

Just chill and relax. They'll get it up eventually.

Does anyone have some kind of an update? I mean seriously someone from sony jump in the chat room for 2 seconds. Hell just tell the janitor to do it if youre too damn busy. Not much to ask I dont think

7 hours is hardly enough time to finish "A Dance with Dragons". Funny how the downtime coincides the same morning that the 6 year wait for aDwD is over.

Okay... on to something else while we have the downtime. Does anyone else play EQ2 using the Logitech G510 Keyboard? I can't seem to get the LCD screen to display game stats, even though the G510 has built-in EQ2 applet and is supported by SOE >8/
Horrible Service...

I agree. I truly feel like SOE is very incompetent. In my time, I've seen very few companies who care less about their customers than SOE. It's sad really, because they could be SO much better if they gave a **** about us too. I'd say the only company worse than SOE would have to be Time Warner... maybe AT&T. It's a shame these fools can still be so successful and still hate paying customers at the same time =\
Horrible Service...

And on what grounds? What do you have to say about them that makes them any different than any other company?

Well 7hrs has turned into 13hrs at this point. I understand why ball park estimates are done. We do massive patch upgrades to our ERP system at work all the time.

What I don't understand is how, after 11yrs of doing these upgrades, Soney can't get an estimate that can be relied upon (some times 5hrs only takes 2hrs, and 4hrs takes an entire day).

If the patches are applied and tested in a QA environment first, then why the major deviation in estimates?

You have to understand that they are a "creative software company" with a massive staff of overinflated egotistical programmer types who are more interested in Hollywood titles like producer, assistant producer, etc. These types of programmers would never be able to cut it in a real mission critical software development environment because they lack a key personality trait…self-discipline and attention to detail. Just look at the horrible inconsistencies in the code SOE develops from the inconsistent look-and-feel of their website to the lack of standards and consistency in their XML code (the UI code we can actually see - imagine what we can’t see).

Simply looking through the UI XML code you can see inconsistent programming styles, standards, etc. It’s like a hundred different programmers with a hundred different ideas programmed that stuff. Just look through the game itself, it’s filled with inconsistencies and lack of adherence to programming standards.

Why are they so bad at these estimates? Because the company has and always will be a “seat of the pants” “cowboy programming” operation with little to no discipline, attention to detail or real understanding of real time programming operations/standards.

You've obviously never worked on large-scale projects with several dozens of programmers for over a decade where programmers come and go over the span of the project and serious overhauls happen based on new technology.

If it's an SOE-wide update, they could be upgrading a server or two - it's possible something didn't reboot, or there was data corruption and a restore needed to be done.

Tons of things extend downtime - but it would still be nice if they could provide an update as opposed to keeping us all out of the loop.

Personally, I would rather they spend all effort trying to get the games back online then giving us hourly updates. If it's gonna be a more long term issue like when they were hacked, I expect daily updates at the least. But, in patch updates, its better they get the games going then update us on why the games arent going.

So WhenTF are the servers coming back up then? It's already well past the time they were supposed to be back online. I'd like an update from these meatheads, without kissing their butts by saying "I'm in it for the long haul". How about instead, they simply get there **** together an update the people who pay them?! FFS already >XO

WHEN?!
# Jul 12 2011 at 10:53 AM Rating: Decent
When you posted it was an hour past the time it was expected the servers would be up. Almost always the servers are down an hour to two hours longer than expected. Anyway, who cares? It will be back when it's back. If it takes awhile petition for time on your account due to the down time. While it's down do something else. There are things on TV right now I'm sure and XBox 360 or PS3 can get you a temporary fix =)
WHEN?!

BAH... Tuesday is the only day my wife and I have off together... our day of absolutely no responsibility while doing nothing productive and offering nothing to society! In other words, IT'S EQ DAY! If these Cyber-Tools don't quickly become a better company regarding care for their customers, then I'll take my $80+ a month elsewhere. Too many new options are opening up for SOE to keep dropping the ball like this... WAY too many.

It most certainly was, on EQ2players and a link by a poster in the General Forums, think it was originally posted on the 7th or earlier in the general forum. Will respond with the link to the post when the forums come back up. Recall the title being Heads Up - July 12th outage, or something close to that

if you click on the unauthorized network intrusion it takes you to the page that they had for the may 2, 2011 thing. They just haven't removed it yet or just leaving it there for people to read.

as for whats going if you read above and go to eqplayers it says they are undergoing planned maintenance. So what if they decided to take everything down at once and do it all one time instead of doing each game/website/access setup at different times.

And the system Sony put in place to reduce downtime did what exactly? Apart from extra downtime adding it in the first place.

You're mixing things up. They made it faster for patches for EQ, and increased the number of things that could be patched without taking the servers down.

Today is SOE wide maintenance, which has nothing to do with the systems you note. They do this type of maintenance maybe 2-3 times a year.
