New items in the Champions Online Cryptic Store!

Not exactly breaking news of the day, but Champions Online fans will probably be eager to check out Champions Online's latest travel power addition, Lightspeed, that is currently available on the C-Store for purchase! Also included in this C-Store update comes the helpful Emily Lovett henchmen, in addition to the Arctic Werewolf Transformation Device. To be honest, that Lightspeed travel power sure does sound interesting...

Champions Online is Officially Free-to-Play

Champions Online is officially free-to-play! The Free for All update is now live, which means players can explore the comic MMO for free with the option to purchase additional premium content separately. Players can also choose to unlock most of the game's content by becoming a subscribed Gold member for $14.99 per month.

Check out the F2P Features Matrix for details on the differences between free Silver members and paid Gold members. One of the major differences is that free players must choose between predefined archetypes to create their characters, while Gold members may customize their characters using a variety of powers and abilities.

Since new players will undoubtedly check out Champions Online now that it's free-to-play, Cryptic has published a New User Guide that explains how to create your account and install the game. The team has also released a new Free for All launch trailer, which you can watch after the jump.

To celebrate Free for All's launch, everything in the Champions Online C-Store is currently 20% off, including lifetime subscriptions. The sale ends on Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. PST.

Cryptic Offers Lifetime Subscription Discounts

Cryptic Studios is pretty busy these days. Champions Online is going free-to-play on Jan. 25 and Star Trek Online is gearing up for it's first anniversary on Feb. 2. Cryptic is celebrating these milestones by offering 20% off the lifetime subscriptions for both games for a limited time.

From January 25 at 6 a.m. PST to Feb. 4 at 10 a.m., players can purchase a lifetime subscription for $239.99 for either Star Trek Online or Champions Online. In addition to no longer paying subscription fees, each lifetime sub also includes a handful of other special features, such as in-game items and forum perks.

You may be wondering why Cryptic is offering a discounted lifetime subscription for Champions Online, a game that will soon be free-to-play. Lifetime subscribers will receive all of the benefits of Gold members, including custom archetypes.

New Cryptic Site Hints at Top Secret Project

Cryptic Studios recently launched a new version of its company website, and it hints that Cryptic is currently working on at least one top secret project. Here are the details from the site's in development page:

"In addition to developing Neverwinter and supporting both Champions Online and Star Trek Online with new content, Cryptic Studios is working on at least one top secret project for Atari.

We're very excited about what we're working on. Like Neverwinter, our Top Secret work represents our continued commitment to diversify and reach beyond the boundaries of traditional MMORPG gaming. We can't wait to show you more!"

Cryptic hasn't supplied any other information on the game aside from that blurb, so we'll just have to wait and see what project (or projects) the company has up its sleeve. As for Neverwinter, the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons game still carries a 2011 release date on the official site.

Champions Online is Going Free-to-Play on Jan. 25

It looks like DC Universe Online's launch isn't the only big comic-based MMO news today. We've known for a few months that Champions Online is going free-to-play in 2011, but now Cryptic has announced the official date: January 25! In two short weeks you'll be able to play Champions Online for free or upgrade to a Gold account for $14.99 per month to unlock most of the game's content and extra features.

Check out the official press release after the jump for all the details. Also, check out our recent interview with Executive Producer Shannon "Poz" Posniewski for more free-to-play information.

ZAM's News Team Looks Back at 2010

As 2010 winds to a close and we prepare for 2011, the ZAM news team decided to take a look back at this year's highs and lows, as well as share what we're excited to see in 2011. Our team has changed a bit recently, so we wanted to take the time to properly introduce ourselves and talk about about our favorite topic: gaming.

Over the next few pages, you'll get to meet Editor-in-Chief Darryl "Togikagi" Gangloff (yours truly), Senior Staff Writer Chris "Pwyff" Tom, Reporter Kayla "Reiyami" Smith and Staff Writer Paul "LockeColeMA" Cleveland. Star Trek, Champions Items are 20% Off in C-Store

Cryptic has gotten in the holiday spirit by offering a Winter Break sale in both Star Trek Online and Champions Online. All items in each game's C-Store are 20% off the listed price until Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. PST, so now's the perfect time to pick up a costume set or ship.

Actually, there's one bit of fine print we should mention to all the Star Trek Online players out there. The new Guramba Siege Destroyer and Motion Picture costume pack are excluded from the Winter Break sale. If you want to purchase either of these new additions, you're going to have to pay full price. Everything else is 20% off, so browse through the C-Store for each game and see if there's anything you'd like to add to your collection.

Cryptic Kicking Off Weekend-Long Black Friday Sale

Everyone loves a good sale, and the guys and girls over at Cryptic have decided to give their players an extra treat for Turkey day weekend with a 20% off sale on most C-Store items in Star Trek Online and Champions Online! Not included within the sale, however, is the Enterprise Bundle (and its component parts), and the Tier 5 Klingon retrofit ships.

For Champions Online, it appears as though the sky's the limit, so if you've always wanted to pick up a nice costume set or maybe some neat starship designs... this weekend will definitely be your chance to do so!

Chatting with Cryptic about Champions Online & F2P

About a month ago, Champions Online announced that they would be making the shift to free-to-play. After the dust had settled and the details became clear, I felt that this really wasn't Champions Online going "free-to-play," rather, it felt as though Cryptic just wanted to introduce an endless free trial to their game. In my editorial, the problem I pointed to was the fact that it seemed as though Silver players (as in all non-subscribers, regardless of how much they've spent on microtransactions) would never be able to play with the same freedom as subscribers, and this struck me as a little bit odd.

There are always, however, opinions to be found for every side. We decided to sit down with Champions Online Executive Producer Shannon "Poz" Posniewski to get the real details on the major decisions made with Champions Online and why Cryptic feels that players should have nothing to fear when it comes to Archetypes and more. Read on!

Lifetime Subscriptions Return to Champions Online

Champions Online may be going free-to-play in 2011, but it looks like devoted players will once again be able to purchase a lifetime subscription to the game for $299. The offer has been off the market for about a year, but Cryptic has brought it back just in time for the F2P switch.

So what will lifetime subscribers get when Champions goes free-to-play? They'll retain all the Gold Member perks for the life of the game, which includes the ability to create custom Archetypes. They will also receive some other special bonuses, such as a Foxbat Action Figure, exclusive costume pieces, eight character slots and more.

What are your thoughts on purchasing a lifetime subscription for a game that's going free-to-play?
